Headstrong Nepali orphan Belmaya has endured a lifetime of abuse and discrimination. At 14, she learns to use a camera with British photographer Sue Carpenter. Through the viewfinder she glimpses a better life. But after Sue leaves, they lose touch. Seven years later the pair are reunited. Now 21, Belmaya is living in a windowless room with her oppressive husband and baby daughter. She has given up on seeing happiness. But her life is about to change, as she embarks on a documentary filmmaking course. Over the next year, Belmaya not only learns technical skills but finds her voice once again.
